Ideas for Starting a Home-Based Business
With the Internet as a simple and low-cost way to connect with potential customers, it’s easier than ever to start a home-based business. And, since home-based businesses are generally fairly inexpensive to begin, they can be a less stressful and intimidating way to begin a career as an entrepreneur. Here are some ideas to consider for your home based business.
Web-Based Home Businesses
These days, more than a decade after the dot-com bubble has burst, Web businesses are no longer the get rich quick schemes they once were. Today, they’re more of a low-cost way to get a good idea rolling, without much capital or equipment—what some entrepreneurs dub LiLos, or “Little in, lot out” businesses. While they won’t be easy to get off the ground, if you do have a good idea and a strong work ethic, Web-based businesses are some of the simplest businesses to actually put into action.
Web-based businesses all have one thing in common: They look to connect customers with something they need in a way that hasn’t been done before. Web-based businesses can take the form of informational websites, companies that ship goods, or something in between. Take the ingenuity of the recently launched business AirBnB.com, for example. Through Internet booking, the site allows you to reserve low-cost accommodations in countries across the world, in people’s spare rooms, or on couches or air mattresses. The offering of accommodations ranges from normal apartments to luxury homes.
Web-based home businesses can also simply be a way to brand your own skills, in order to begin freelancing instead of working for someone else. Writers, programmers, and other consultants have the option to work for themselves, via the net, thanks to VoIP software and the Internet.
Meat-Space Home Businesses
If working solely through the Web isn’t your thing, not to worry. There are plenty of businesses where you can use the space in your home as an actual space to work or interact with customers. The key here is to look at your own skills or passion, and to see how it could apply to a home-based business. Here are some ideas:
- Food: Baking or cooking food items, catering, or other specialty food making operations
- Art & Crafts: Creating and selling candles, painting, making ceramics, and illustrating
- Cosmetology: Hair cutting, styling, facials, and other beauty treatments
- Computer Repair: Hardware repair, data recovery, or other computer services
- Photographer: Photographers often shoot on-site, and don’t need a studio
Considerations
While the benefits of working for yourself at home are great, there are some significant considerations to take into account as well. When starting a home-based business, you’ll most likely be working alone. If you’re used to this then it may not be a problem, but some can find the isolation difficult at first. You’ll also need to be aware of the local legal restrictions for running a home-based business, as well as insurance and tax concerns.
